Family arriving at Goodnestone Park Mansion, a Kent country house, for a winter staycation

Winter Getaways in Kent - A Family Staycation at Goodnestone Park Mansion

Looking for a winter getaway that’s a little different from the usual cottage break? At Goodnestone Park, you can spend the darker months somewhere genuinely unique,  inside a historic Kent country house with the whole family under one roof.

As the gardens settle into their winter quiet and the fires are lit within, there is nowhere quite like Goodnestone for a UK winter staycation. Rather than a hotel room or a self-catering cottage, our Grade II* Listed Mansion offers something rarer – an entire historic house, close to Canterbury, that becomes entirely yours for a few nights.

A Large Group Country House Stay in Kent

If you’re searching for large group accommodation in Kent, or a country house that sleeps a big family gathering, Goodnestone Park Mansion is built for exactly that. Built in 1704 for Sir Brook Bridges, this Queen Anne country house has welcomed family and friends for over three centuries. Jane Austen herself was a regular visitor while staying nearby with her brother Edward, and it’s said the house and its surroundings helped inspire the world of Pride and Prejudice.

The Mansion offers 12 individually styled bedrooms, sleeping up to 24 guests, making it one of the largest self-contained family holiday houses in Kent, and a wonderful setting for a multi-generational family staycation, a milestone celebration, or a big winter gathering with friends. Each room carries its own character, many named after former residents and visitors, with roaring log fires, deep armchairs and garden views that turn frost-silvered in winter light.

A Cosy Winter Staycation, Home From Home

For all its grandeur, staying at Goodnestone never feels formal. This is a house designed to be lived in, to curl up in with a book by the fire, to gather around the table after a long countryside walk, to feel, quite simply, at home. It’s this balance of history and comfort that makes a winter getaway here so special: crackling fireplaces, low winter light through tall windows, and an entire historic house to yourselves, the kind of cosy, fireside escape UK travellers increasingly look for each winter.
